Climate Friendly Community
Written by Rachel Elliott
Monday, 14 July 2008

Ibstock is one of two 'Climate Friendly Communities' announced by Leicestershire County Council, at the ENABLE Conference on Thursday 10 July 2008.  The other communities are Tilton on the Hill/Halstead who will be working with Sustainable Billesdon.

"Ibstock does Climate Change" will receive an award of £500 to 'kick start' its work with North West Leicestershire District Council on its yearlong Footprints campaign and to work with ICE to reach out to local community groups and youth groups to raise awareness of issues around climate change and to train climate change champions for community groups.

Advice, training and support will be available from ENABLE's officers and there will be training sessions for community groups from across the County, run by Leicestershire Rural Community Council, in September and October.

ENABLE, Environmental Action for a Better Leicestershire, is the environmental voice for Leicestershire, with a seat on Leicestershire Together, the Leicestershire Strategic Partnership.  It has recently released a Climate Change Action Plan and Leicestershire Together Declaration on Climate change for organisations wanting to demonstrate their commitment to tackling climate change.  More information about their work is available at www.leics.gov.uk/climate_change.

The funding for this project was received from East Midlands Regional Assembly, as part of their work to raise awareness of climate change issues throughout the region.

Ibstock United Football Club are delighted that the final piece of the funding jigsaw has been secured to allow their developments at Leicester Road and Ashby Road in Ibstock to go ahead.  The project will see the creation of new changing blocks on both sites, and an additional pitch at Leicester Road.

The total value of the project is just over £798,000 and funding has come from:

  • The Football Foundation
  • Ibstock Housing Renewal Area
  • s106 funding from the development of The Hastings site
  • David Wilson Foundation
  • North West Leicestershire District Council
  • Football Stadia Improvement Fund.

Vital to the success of the project has been development funding from Leicester Shire Economic Partnership, the Coalfields Regeneration Trust Bridging the Gap Programme and support from local organisations such as Ibstock Brick plc, David Wilson Homes, Ibstock Parish Council, Ibstock Miners Welfare and Ibstock Community Enterprises Ltd.  The overall development of the project and the funding applications has been a partnership between the Club, Ibstock Miners Welfare and North West Leicestershire District Council.

Currently, the junior section of Ibstock United caters for approximately 350 young people from different backgrounds.  They can start with the Club at the age of five and progress through the Club, all the way to the veterans group.

Work has started on the site at Ashby Road and the site at Leicester Road is currently being made secure to allow work to start.  Wootton Harwick & Coleman have been appointed as the Contractors, and the work to create the new pitch will be undertaken by Mumby Landscapes.  Work should be completed September/October 2008.
